Puerto Princesa, Palawan
November 11, 2018
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte joins in the celebration as the province of Palawan launches its first ‘Subaraw Biodiversity Festival’ at the People’s Amphitheater in Puerto Princesa, Palawan on November 11, 2018.
Previously known as the Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR) Festival, beginning this year, the local government of Palawan elevates its yearly festivity by making it the island’s main attraction — renaming the event as ‘Subaraw’ Festival to add to its national appeal that would rival the country’s better-known festivals such as the Sinulog of Cebu, Masskara of Bacolod, and Panagbenga of Baguio City.
The word Subaraw comes from a portmanteau of two local words: suba (river) and taraw (limestone cliff) in recognition of the Puerto Princesa Underground River after it was named as a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage Site and declared as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature of the World on November 11, 2011.
Following the Presidential Proclamation No. 816, “Declaring November 11 of Every Year as Puerto Princesa Underground River Day,” the government of Palawan has been keen to make the yearly event as grand by staging street parades, street dances and floats, complete with cash prizes amounting to PhP 200,000 to PhP 500,000.
