MANILA, Philippines – The recent deaths of designer Kate Spade and celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, both renowned figures in their respective fields who faced mental health issues despite successful careers, have raised global awareness on mental disorder.
While the Philippines has been considered as one of the happiest countries in the world, it has the highest number of depressed people in Southeast Asia, with an average of seven suicides a day. One in five adult Filipinos are considered to suffer from mental illness, primarily schizophrenia, depression and anxiety.
To educate the public on this menacing issue this Suicide Prevention Month, the Women’s Business Council of the Philippines’ (WBCP), an advocacy group for women economic development, will hold a symposium entitled Crawling Out of the Black Hole of Depression and Mental Illnesses.
The WBCP will discuss business and workplace contributing to mental illnesses, their symptoms, and how to overcome and properly manage them.
The event will be this year’s episode for the talk series Women Mentoring Women (W2W) Talks, organized by WBCP as part of its advocacy to help women in business and economic development.
Guest speakers will be composed of renowned women in the persons of Dr. Corazon Angela M. Cuadro, MD, a practicing psychiatrist; Pam Pastor, journalist and singer diagnosed with clinical depression and anxiety disorder in December 2015; and Jeannie Goulborn, designer-wellness advocate and president of the non-profit Natasha Goulbourn Foundation.
The symposium will be held on September 27, Thursday from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Narra-Yakal Room of The Dusit Thani Hotel Manila.
